NIC BRISSETTE
“Geology: Scaled Application”
Casting a wide net down to the rock fabric to demonstrate scales and what makes resources economic
Nicolas O. Brissette is an exploration and generating geologist working the Permian Basin as an independent geologist, and consults for Helms Oil and Gas, Yates Energy Corporation, Zarvona Energy, Indian Canyon Ranch, and multiple land play outfits. He is widely experienced in upstream facets including regional exploration and development geology for both conventional and unconventional resource plays, prospect evaluation, well site geology, field operations, geophysics, geomechanics, and drilling engineering. After graduate school, he immediately hired on with Gunn Oil Company in Wichita Falls, TX, where he worked with wildcatter R.D. Gunn and esteemed Texas explorationists. While at Gunn Oil, he worked remote structural basins such as the Palo Duro Basin, Tucumcari Basin, Kerr Basin, Whittenburg Trough, and the Hardeman and Gunn Grabens. His primary focus was on the Eastern Shelf stratigraphy from the Val Verde Basin north to the Matador Arch, where he managed operational drilling and prospect generation programs.
Nic worked the Eagle Ford/Austin Chalk from the Sabinas Platform in Mexico to the over pressured regimes in Louisiana, and generated prospects within the Eagle Ford by driving the identification and evaluation of targeted acreage acquisitions. After the Gulf Coast, he worked as a geological manager/VP in Midland, TX for a PE company where he oversaw a 5-rig program in the Delaware Basin drilling the Bone Spring and Wolfcamp bench formations. He managed the program through mechanical earth models and production evaluations by high grading lateral reservoir targets by linking reservoir characterization and end cash flows while all long plumbed into the engineering department.
Nic earned a Bachelor of Arts in geology from DePauw University and a Master of Science in geology from Ball State University. He is a member of AAPG, is a certified petroleum geologist through the Division of Professional Affairs. He served as president of South West Section AAPG from 2017-2018, served at AAPG SWS Advisory Council from 2020 – 2023, Oklahoma City Geological Society President from 2024-2026, and North Texas Geological Society President in 2010. He served on the national board of AAPG’s Continuing Education Committee, AAPG’s Datapages, but currently serves as AAPG’s DPA Secretary/Treasurer, OCGS’s AAPG HOD delegate, and AAPG’s Visiting Geoscientists. He belongs to the American Rock Mechanics Association, the American Association of Drilling Engineers, and currently is a member of NTGS, WTGS and OCGS.
